Rayonier Adopts Riverbed-first Approach
Rayonier Advanced Materials has announced that it adopted a ‘Riverbed-first’ approach when it redesigned its IT environment, only selecting cloud providers that use Riverbed SteelHead in their data centres.
Rayonier Advanced Materials is the world’s leading producer of high-value speciality cellulose fibres and was recently spawned out of the international forest products company Rayonier. The firm developed such a deep trust in Riverbed Technology, the leader in application performance infrastructure, after it first used the vendor’s SteelHead application acceleration solutions, which they stated was “the most successful piece of technology we have put in place in 14 years”.
Using SteelHead and VMware, Rayonier was able to consolidate 230 distributed servers across eight data centres into a private cloud environment consisting of just 15 virtualised servers in two data centres. The company says that users experienced up to 18 times faster performance as a result of the streamlining. Moreover, the company saw a return on its Riverbed investment in less than one year.
As a result of the success, Rayonier now has a ‘Riverbed-first’ approach, ensuring any cloud provider it opts for is compatible with SteelHead solutions. The company’s director of IT operations, David Nettles, explained: “In setting up the Rayonier Advanced Materials environment, we knew we couldn’t do it without SteelHead.
“Bandwidth is very expensive in some of the places we operate, two to three times as much as it would be in a big city. Without SteelHead, we’d end up with extremely high network costs. So one of our requirements in picking a cloud provider was that we could install our SteelHead appliances there.”
