Arbor Recognised As Leading Protector Against DDoS Attacks
New research has identified Arbor Networks Inc. as the top supplier of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection solutions.
The study by Infonetics Research said that Arbor, a leading supplier of distributed DDoS and advanced threat protection solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, was also named as the leading vendor in the carrier, enterprise, mobile and government market segments.
In a report entitled ‘DDoS Prevention Appliance Market Outlook’, Infonetics Research examined the IT threat landscape as well as the main market drivers and solution providers in the security space. The main focus of the paper was on how, over the past 24 months, the nature of attacks has changed from ones that were stealthy, complex application-layer attacks to the increasingly prominent threat of DDoS attacks.
DDoS attacks target a single service, flooding it with incoming messages. This forces it to shut down, thereby denying service to the system to legitimate users. As well as the rise in DDoS attacks, the report also stated that there was a higher volume of other attacks like the Domain Name System (DNS) and Network Time Protocol (NTP) amplification attacks, which are pushing the boundaries of mitigation performance.
Arbor Networks President Matthew Moynahan commented: “DDoS continues to be a very resilient attack vector.
“Two years ago, financial services firms were dealing with sophisticated blended threats that combined application and volumetric attacks in a single, sustained campaign. This year, we are seeing a dramatic spike in very high volume attacks that take advantage of DNS and NTP amplification. Next year, we’re likely to see something new again.
“What won’t change is the need for detection and mitigation capabilities on-premise, and in the cloud.”
Nevertheless, while the threat landscape is evolving all the time, at present the most pertinent issue that must be addressed is DDoS attacks. Whereas these use to be relatively basic – they would just bombard a target with huge volume – today they are more likely to be a complex series of attacks that target not just connection bandwidth, but multiple devices that make up existing security infrastructure.
Best practice defence, such as Arbor Cloud DDoS Protection, which was recognised as the leading market solution within the report, defends both the cloud environment from volume attacks as well as the on-premise applications and infrastructure. The Arbor Cloud protects enterprises against a wide range of DDoS attacks and it enables IT staff to maintain greater control of mitigation, thereby giving them the ability to act promptly when a threat is identified.
Jeff Wilson, principal analyst with Infonetics Research, explained: “We are starting to see strong customer demand for hybrid solutions that blend in-cloud or hosted DDoS mitigation with on-premise solutions and provide a single management, reporting, and forensics pane even as attack prevention moves back and forth from a provider’s cloud to the customer’s network.
“Arbor is ahead of the trend, first by connecting cloud-based services to their Pravail product, and now with the availability of Arbor Cloud, their hybrid solution.”
